การที่เราจะถามข้อมูลของบุคคลอื่น เราต้องมีความเข้าใจในคำที่ใช้ถามเสียก่อน คำที่ใช้ถามนี้ภาษาอังกฤษเรียกว่า

What แปลว่า อะไร ถ้าถามเกี่ยวกับคน ให้ตอบอาชีพ เช่น

นอกจากนี้ใช้ถามเกี่ยวกับสิ่งของได้ เช่น

What ใช้ถามเกี่ยวกับเวลา เช่น

Who แปลว่า ใคร ตอบชื่อคน (ส่วนใหญ่เมื่อเป็นประธานของประโยค) เช่น

When แปลว่า เมื่อไหร่ ตอบเป็นเวลา เช่น

Next month.
About four o'clock.

Where แปลว่า ที่ไหน ตอบเป็นสถานที่ เช่น

Why แปลว่า ทำไม ตอบเหตุผล เช่น

Because she had a stomachache.

Which แปลว่า สิ่งไหน อันไหน ให้เลือกตอบอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง เช่น

Whose แปลว่า ของใคร ตอบ คนที่เป็นเจ้าของ

How แปลว่า อย่างไร ใช้ถามได้ในหลายกรณี เช่น ถามเกี่ยวกับสภาพดินฟ้าอากาศ
